Elgin Marbles, British Museum – Photo a Day – Travel Photography (Travel Photos)

Housed in London’s British Museum, the Elgin Marbles are one of the museum’s greatest treasures. Once on the ancient Parthenon’s pediments, the marbles were taken from Greece and housed in the English capital. Still to this day, Greece wants what are some of their greatest cultural treasures returned home.

Temple Church, London – Photo a Day – Travel Photography (Travel Photos)

Temple Church was built by the Knights Templar, the order of crusading monks who were tasked to protect pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land during the 12th century.

The portion of the Church known as the Round was consecreted in 1185 by the patriarch of Jerusalem himself, Heraclius. Henry II may very well have been at the ceremony as well. It was supposed to echo the Church of the Holy Sepulchur, one of the holiest cathedrals in Christendom.

Once thought to be tombs of crusading knights, the stone effigies were soon deemed to only be depictions of knights as there are no bodies under the tombs.

From the top of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, England, one can see the entire skyline of London. However, it is when I looked straight down that I witnessed people looking like toys fanning out from a central monument.
