The Aya Sophia of Istanbul, otherwise known as Hagia Sophia or St Sophia was built by Emperor Justinian I of the Byzantine Empire in the 6th century A.D. There were three Aya Sophia’s before the magnificent one seen today. Truly, the Aya Sophia was and still is a crowning jewel of medieval Christianity.
